Nonhuman primates have been used by humans throughout history in a number of ways, including the exotic pet trade, entertainment and biomedical research. In many of these situations, the animals suffer physically and mentally from unnatural living conditions and social isolation. Increasingly, legislation is curbing their use in these industries, and the public supports their humane treatment. Primate sanctuaries are relied on now, more than ever, to provide lifetime homes for retired apes and monkeys.

The North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance (NAPSA) is a coalition of eight of the leading primate sanctuaries on the continent. NAPSA member sanctuaries work to unite the primate sanctuary community and provide the highest standards of care for the close to 700 apes and monkeys in our facilities. We speak with one unified voice, on their behalf.
