Although technically against the laws of Belize, capturing and keeping wild-caught parrots has been a long-standing cultural practice that has now become unsustainable as our human footprint grows and spreads.
Belize Bird Rescue works to educate and inform the public of the natural and man-made threats to wild parrots in Belize, and the monetary value of abundant wild bird species through sustainable tourism practices. They work with the Belize Forest Department to enact legislation protecting wild parrots, show licensed owners how to care appropriately for birds already in captivity for and, most importantly, provide a rehab for release facility for confiscated or surrendered birds. BBR's rehab program has successfully returned more than 600 former-captive parrots to the wild.
