Beyond its role as a living symbol of our natural landscape, the wolf is a keystone species. Its presence is critical to maintaining the integrity of native ecosystems. Wolves once ranged across most of North America, but an unremitting slaughter by humans brought wolves to the brink of extinction. The lands where they once roamed were diminished, as was our own relationship to the wilderness. Only if we we open our hearts can we right past wrongs. Only if we follow sound science shall wolves be saved.
The Wolf Conservation Center is committed to conserving wolf populations in North America through science-based education programming and participation in the federal Species Survival Plans for the critically endangered Mexican gray wolf and red wolf. Through wolves the WCC teaches the broader message of conservation, ecological balance, and personal responsibility for improved human stewardship of our World. Wolves are essential!
