Issue

Today elephants are threatened by a burgeoning demand for ivory, growing human populations and habitat loss. For elephants to persist and thrive in the modern world requires conservation solutions that balance human and elephant needs, and an end to the devastating ivory trade.

Response

The Amboseli Elephant Research Project is the longest running study of wild elephants in the world. Since 1972 we have followed more than 3,000 individuals from birth to death. Much of what is known about elephant biology comes from our research, and we are uniquely placed to answer important questions about where and how elephants will survive across Africa. We are now working on understanding what makes elephants robust or vulnerable to the human-driven changes that are shaping their domain. We host media teams from around the world who use our knowledge and science to gather support for an end to the trade in ivory, and show the world what makes elephants so very special.
