The African lion is in crisis. Experts agree that fewer than 40,000 remain in the wild. The species faces imminent danger of extinction due to several human-caused and natural factors including over-exploitation by recreational trophy hunting and commercial trade, loss of habitat and prey species, retaliatory killings and disease.

Born Free USA is leading the charge to protect and preserve the African lion by putting an end to commercial trophy hunting, stopping the import of lion parts by foreign countries and campaigning to officially list the African lion as an endangered species.
