In the food industry, turkeys are slaughtered at 5 months old, less than 5% of their natural lifespan. Commercial breeds have been genetically manipulated to grow so big, so fast that even after being rescued, they can develop leg problems and other health conditions. 250-300 million turkeys are killed every year in this country. 46 million turkeys are killed every year for Thanksgiving alone.
