I painted this amazing silverback gorilla in pastels after taking photos of him in a zoo. I felt so privileged and honored to be able take portrait photos of him with only a plate glass window between the couple of feet that separated us. I also felt incredibly sad that this magnificent, intelligent gorilla was living in a zoo and not in the wild where he belonged. I titled my painting, The Ambassador, because I realized that this silverback gorilla is really an ambassador for all of the wild gorillas. People will learn about gorillas and care about the endangered gorillas still living in the wild just by being in his presence.
